My First Pow-WOW!

Mommy and Daddy took me to my first pow-wow on Saturday.  It was a misty sort of day.   But all in all, I think we had a good time.

For those of you who do not know (like me before Saturday) a pow-wow is a Native American gathering.  Some of the people at the pow-wow wear regalia and they dance.

The music at a pow-wow comes from a drum and singers.  I have seen a drum before.  We have one in our house.  It is okay when it is just sitting there, but when they play it, it makes a really loud noise that I don’t like a lot.

 drum

This is me a month or so ago with our drum.  Notice, they are not playing it, so I got close to check it out.

There were two drums at the pow-wow on Saturday.

016

I didn’t mind listening to them outside.  In fact, Mommy and I even walked over near the drums several times and I did get too uncomfortable.

Pow-wow’s also have “vendors”.  These are people who set up tents and sell stuff.   Mommy and I walked around several times visiting the vendors and buying a few things.

011

Here I am sitting in front of one of the vending tables.

But mostly, I got to meet a lot of new people.  Every time someone asked to pet me, Mommy said I had to sit first.  I sat soooooo many times.  But is was worth it.  Because, some people got down on my level and let me give them kisses.

002

Because this pow-wow was organized by the HorseNet Horse Rescue, naturally, there were also horses there.  The lady on the second horse is a friend of Mommies.  She is riding with her son!  The horses weren’t scary, but then again, Mommy didn’t let me get too close either.

003

When I saw my first man in regalia, I barked at him.  But when he came over and petted me, I knew that stuff was okay.  But one thing did upset me.

019

Do you see the man in the white, red and black outfit?  Well, he wears something Mommy called “Bells”.  They make a noise that I was really not sure of.  I growled a bit at him and anyone else wearing bells.  When I did, Mommy got up and walked me away.  She says I will need to learn to be around bells and we will work on it at home.

010

Mommy even managed to take a picture of herself and me at the pow-wow.  I was a bit busy watching the dancers as were Aunt C and Uncle L  who were standing behind us.

I have to say, I really enjoyed my first pow-wow.  And I can’t wait to go again.  Mommy says next time we will be going in the “camper” – whatever that is.

Puppy Kisses,

Tanner

  5. hey Tanner,

A Pow-Wow looks pawsome! I have never been to one, but my human has and she loved it. I loved all the pictures, especially of the Native American's in dressed in their regalia. Very cool! I am glad you had a good time and did not get too frightened by the horses and all the other new noises and sights.

    Thanks for sharing!

  7. WOW that sounds like a very cool event! My spotted sister does not like loud noises too. She too would be very scared with those drum sounds. Glad to know you had a great time at your 1st Pow Wow event!
